corals are a critical ecosystem

Corals Are A CRITCAL ECOSYSTEM

WITHOUT A VIABLE FUTURE FOR CORAL THE GLOBAL MARINE ECOSYSTEM WILL COLLAPSE.

We know that globally, coral reefs support a quarter of all marine life and the livelihoods of a billion people in over 100 countries.

Our coral reefs give:

VALUE

They have a global economic value of $375 billion a year.

MONEY

They drive the economies of coastal communities through tourism, fishing and recreation.

LIFE

They act as a filter and assist in carbon and nitrogen fixing, AND they help with nutrient recycling.

FOOD

They provide food and sustenance for hundreds of millions of people.

PROTECTION

They protect coastlines from the damaging effects of wave action and storms, and this is an increasing protection given the changing patterns of climate.

CAN WE RISK THE MAJOR WORLDWIDE CONSEQUENCES OF INACTION?

CORALS ARE DYING

BY 2030 THE PERCENTAGE OF THREATENED REEFS WILL BE MORE THAN 90%. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THIS WILL RISE TO INCLUDE NEARLY ALL REEFS BY 2050.

We are working hard to safeguard against this reality. We know, that coupled with the changing patterns of climate, the decline of our coral reef systems is impacted by the movement of shipping and the ports that facilitate and receive them.

This decline includes:

  • The hundreds of thousands of tonnes of corals that are bulldozed every year by fishing vessels.
  • The millions of corals that are destroyed by critical and necessary infrastructure, including port facilities and dredging.
  • The impacts from the oil and gas mining sectors.
  • The movement of shipping and passenger cruising vessels.
  • The acidity being experienced that is more than at any time in the last 400,000 years due to the 22 million tonnes of CO2 absorbed yearly in the world’s
          oceans.
  • The runoff from sewage, cities and farms that feed the algae that overwhelm our coral reefs.
  • The chemicals from the estimated 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen used by swimmers that threatens up to 10% of the world’s coral.

THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM THAT WE NEED TO SOLVE TOGETHER BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
